The American Association of Orthodontists recommends
that all children have an orthodontic consultation by the age of seven.
There is an ideal time to begin orthodontics in order to achieve the
best results. Orthodontists have the skills to determine when that time
is right. By checking children early, Dr. Basile can detect subtle problems
with teeth and jaw growth, determine if treatment is needed, and when
treatment should begin. Even if a problem is detected, immediate treatment
may not be recommended. Chances are Dr. Basile will then take a “wait
and see approach.” Parents should also have their child checked
periodically as the permanent teeth erupt and the jaws and face continue
to grow. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the
growth of the jaw and the incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can
also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space
for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions,
reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking,
and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words,
early treatment, if needed, can simplify later treatment.
