If you are an adult and have always been unhappy with
the appearance of your smile, orthodontics might be right for you. More
adults are seeking orthodontic treatment later in life. A person’s
age should not be a factor when considering orthodontics.
The process is virtually the same as it would be for an adolescent. Orthodontic
treatment can improve the smile of most people because
healthy teeth
can be moved at any age. In fact, one in five orthodontic
patients is an adult. Because the jaws of adults are no longer growing,
it may be
necessary for some adult orthodontic patients to have
orthognathic (jaw) surgery to achieve an ideal correction. Adults may
also require periodontal
treatment before, during, and/or after orthodontic
treatment because they have experienced some breakdown of the bone that
supports their
teeth. Existing bone loss or periodontal disease can
limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable.
